Have you lost access to your wallet and want to regain access to your wallet so you can transfer your coins? Than this is the guide for you.

The Vechain blockchain is completely decentralized, meaning there is no central authority that can access wallets or undo transaction. We as the Vechain Foundation thus have no control over transactions or wallets and are unable to help you regain access to your wallet.

Please see Method A or Method B depending on which scenario applies to your situation

Method A: I forgot my wallet password but have my backup seed phrase

Recovering your cryptocurrency wallet using your backup seed phrase is a procedure designed to restore access to your funds in case you lose your password or your wallet becomes inaccessible. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Step 1: Locate Your Backup Seed Phrase

  • Find Your Seed Phrase: Your seed phrase is usually a series of 12, 18, or 24 words provided when you first set up your wallet. Locate this phrase; it's essential for recovery.

Step 2: Choose a Compatible Wallet

  • Select a Wallet: If you can't use your original wallet, choose a new one that supports the seed phrase format you have. Most wallets support standard formats like BIP39. We suggest downloading our official wallet from veworld.com. We can not provide support for third party wallets.
  • Download Safely: Ensure you download the wallet software from a legitimate source to avoid scams or malware.

Step 3: Initiate the Recovery Process

  • Select 'Add Wallet': Most wallets will have an option to "Restore" or "Import" a wallet on the initial setup screen. Please see the following video on what this process looks like in our VeWorld wallet: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qxJmBzjwFvo
  • Enter Seed Phrase: Carefully enter your seed phrase in the order it was provided. Accuracy is critical here.
  • Verify: Verify that you regained access to the address you expected, if after import you see a different wallet address than you expected, it means your recovery seed phrase was incorrect.

Step 4: Secure Your Wallet

  • Set a New Password: After restoring your wallet, set a new strong password. Make sure it’s something secure yet memorable.
  • Store your new Password: Make sure to store your wallet in a safe and secure place, like a password manager. Never store your passwords on a piece of paper lying around your house, or in an email account that has a higher risk of being hacked.

Step 5: Verify and Access Your Funds

  • Check Your Balance: After recovery, check to ensure that your funds are intact and the wallet is functioning correctly.
  • Transfer Funds if Necessary: If you have security concerns about the restored wallet, consider transferring your funds to another secure wallet.

Step 6: Maintain Security

  • Store Seed Phrase Securely: Keep your seed phrase in a secure location, such as a safe or a secure password manager.
  • Regular Backups: Regularly backup your wallet, especially after every transaction involving a change in your wallet’s security settings.

Tips and Warnings

  • Never Share Your Seed Phrase: Your seed phrase is the key to your wallet. Never share it with anyone.
  • Beware of Phishing: Be cautious of emails or messages asking for your seed phrase. Legitimate services will never ask for it.
  • Consider Hardware Wallets: For added security, especially if you are managing significant amounts of cryptocurrency, consider using a hardware wallet. Our wallet VeWorlds supports ledger hardware wallets.

Method B: I forgot my wallet password and backup seed phrase

If you've forgotten your cryptocurrency wallet password and don't have access to your backup seed phrase, regaining access can be challenging, but there are steps you can take. Here is a guide to help you through this situation:

1. Assess the Situation

  • Determine Wallet Type: Identify whether your wallet is hardware-based, software-based, or a web wallet.
  • Check for Clues: Look for any written notes, saved documents, or secure storage where you might have kept the password or seed phrase.

2. Attempt Basic Recovery Methods

  • Password Variations: Try variations of passwords you commonly use.
  • Email Search: Search your email for any communication from the wallet provider that might contain hints or backup information.
  • Check Backup Devices: If you've used multiple devices, check them for any stored passwords or recovery information.

3 Use Recovery Tools

  • Password Managers: If you’ve ever saved the password in a password manager, check there.
  • Cryptocurrency Recovery Services: Some services specialize in wallet recovery. They often use methods like brute force attacks to guess your password. When using these services make sure to select one you can trust, there are many scammers available who only want to steal your coins.

4. Learning and Prevention

  • Backup Practice: In the future, ensure to keep a secure and accessible backup of your seed phrase and password.
  • Educate Yourself: Learn more about best practices in managing and securing crypto wallets.
